UFC president Dana White says Irishman Ian Machado Garry could face Colby Covington in his next fight.
Machado Garry, 26, defeated Britain’s Michael Page last June in the biggest win of his UFC career to date.
The Dubliner is number seven in the UFC’s welterweight rankings, while two-time title contender Covington is one spot above him.
White said Covington is one of the “few options” for Machado Garry and that the UFC is actively looking for his next opponent.
Covington, 36, hasn’t fought since last December, when he was outclassed by then-UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards.
The American has 17 wins in 24 matches, while Machado Garry is undefeated in 15 fights.
Could Nunes make a UFC comeback?
Former bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes sparked rumors of a UFC comeback this week by urging White to reach out to her via a video on social media.
Julianna Pena is the new bantamweight champion after defeating Raquel Pennington at UFC 307 last Saturday.
Nunes appeared to respond to Pena’s call for her title win, and White responded to the prospect of the two-weight world champion’s return.
“She looks like she’s still in shape,” White said of Nunes’ comments.
“She keeps an eye on who wins the title next. I think she’s teasing that she might be interested in coming back.”
Brazil’s Nunes has one defeat on her record against Pena, but defeated the American in a rematch in 2022 and then retired after her next fight in June 2023.
Kayla Harrison joined the UFC since Nunes’ retirement after years of back-and-forth between her and Nunes on social media.
Two-time Olympic judo champion Harrison is tipped to be the next to face Pena should beaten champion Pennington fail in her bid to secure a rematch.
